Doctors Seek To Extract More Organs Like The Heart

With the need to have more organs for people in need, a new pilot project has been launched to maximize the number of organs that can be recovered from already dead people.

When people die at the hospital, it is much easier to save some vital organs. That is however not the case with people that die in the house. Mostly, 20 minutes is all that medics have to save an organ. After that time, most of the organs are as useless as the dead person. For some reasons, the project will only concentrate on saving kidneys for now.

That is how the new program comes in. The new pilot project which will run for six months will be used to save kidneys of people that die at home. With the consent of family members, paramedics will use special ambulance to save the organs. However before that can be done, a police officer will have to first verify that there is no foul play.

If the pilot project at New York is successful, the project will be rolled out in the whole of the United States. It is believed the success of the project will go a long way to help address the enormous demand for vital organs.

It is estimated that about 4,650 people in the United States died last year while waiting for a donor to donate a kidney for them.
