GOP Flexes Muscle
The Republicans in Senate have given their highest indication yet that they will not make the remaining term of Barack Obama that smooth for him.
The Republicans threatened that they will ensure that no law is passed until the George Bush-era tax breaks are extended upon expiration. With a total seat of 42, the Republicans in the Senate have just about enough seats to bully their way through.
The 42 Senators jointly signed a letter that was addressed to the Majority Leader, Harry Reid. The letter stated categorically that, “While there are other items that might ultimately be worthy of the Senate’s attention, we cannot agree to prioritize any matters above the critical issues of funding the government and preventing a job-killing tax hike”.
The threats will no doubt affect the Democrats attempt to repeal the famous “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in the Pentagon. But the Republicans might not have the mandate to hijack other sensitive issues that are currently in front of the House.
This was the worse fears of the Obama administration after the midterm elections. The increased numbers will no doubt force the administration to listen more to the opposition and sometimes compromise on positions.
The Republican Leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell summed the whole standoff up with the following words “Republicans have pleaded with Democrats to put aside their wish-list to focus on the things Americans want us to focus on. They’ve ignored us. The voters repudiated their agenda at the polls. They’ve ignored them. Time is running out. They’re ignoring that.”
