Wyclef Jean Set To Run In Next Haitian Presidential Race

Wyclef Jean Makes A Bid To Run For President Of Haiti

Wyclef Jean, a Haitian-American musician, record producer and recently turned politician has declared himself a candidate for the presidency of the recently earthquake shaken country of Haiti.

Jean was born in Haiti and is the son of a Nazarene pastor. Jean who is now 37 years old, migrated to the U.S when he was 9 years. He briefly attended Nazarene Eastern College, but did not finish, a decision he says he regrets. He is also a former member of The Fugees – an influential hip-hop three-member group.

After the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12th, Jean was among volunteer workers in Port-au-Prince collecting dead bodies. His charity foundation Yele was able to raise millions of dollars to spur the recovery in Haiti. However they have also faced criticism concerning some of their financial dealings.

His announcement has been greeted with mixed reactions. The youth of Haiti are thrilled to know that Wyclef Jean is running for President. Saintil Wilson, 22 was quoted saying “Good thing. We need somebody who is younger and stronger and has more power to run Haiti.”  However political and intellectual establishments have reservations about his leadership abilities. Before he can begin campaigning an electoral committee will have to validate whether or not Jean meets the specific requirements to be a Presidential candidate. These are just a few hurdles that Jean will have to scale in order to be the next President of Haiti. One thing is certain though things are only going to get harder as the elections draw closer.
